Part 2: 💲Your cohorts look profitable, but… A paywall experiment can create problems beyond the users it brings in. If refunds and disputes raise concerns about your business, your processor may hold part of your funds in reserve. That money isn’t necessarily lost. But you can’t use it to fund the next campaign. Winning chargebacks doesn’t automatically fix the problem. Stripe notes that card-network monitoring programs don’t wait for dispute outcomes. Fraud reports are separate signals, too. “We won the disputes” doesn’t mean your payment metrics are healthy. 👨‍⚖️Making cancellation difficult adds legal risk. The federal click-to-cancel rule was overturned, but ROSCA still requires clear subscription terms, informed consent and a simple way to stop recurring charges. Amazon’s 2025 settlement over Prime signup and cancellation practices totalled $2.5 billion: a $1 billion penalty and $1.5 billion in consumer refunds. Before scaling, connect the ad promise to the paywall, renewals, cancellations, refunds and disputes. Track that journey by cohort, traffic source and funnel version. Otherwise, marketing can declare a winner while payments and legal are still calculating the cost.
